Known as the "Black Eden of Michigan," the rural resort town of Idlewild was once a haven for the nation's middle-class African-Americans during years of intense racism and discrimination. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, however, visitors dwindled and the community fell into disrepair. A few faithful residents are now working to restore the idyllic town to its former splendor. Written by Yasmin Rammohan. Originally published January 2008, Midwest Current |
